Supporting your resilience!

MICHAELA SCHOK, PHD
Psychologist, coach and scientist

My mission is to strengthen resilience and increase psychological flexibility in people. As a resilience practioner I apply coaching, counseling and training for body and mind. The natural resilience of people in (highly) stressful circumstances has always fascinated me. Awareness and training of this power increases adaptability. As a PhD psychologist, I have expertise on posttraumatic stress, meaning making and strengthening resilience. As a counselor I have gained experience in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma and dissociation and I apply Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR. As a psychologist (PhD) I am highly motivated to coach and support people in highly stressful circumstances caused by work or life events. I will be happy to support your resilience!

INTERVENTIONS
Supporting your resilience!
Do you suffer from anxiety, depression, irritability or poor sleep? Often this is related to stressful circumstances in your life or shocking experiences you have gone through. It is then extra important to pay attention to your own strengths. Together we will get started with your request for help. Depending on the request for help, I can support you with various treatment techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
METHODS
Evidenced based interventions

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
Seeing the forest for the trees again! (Dutch expression)
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a combination of two forms of psychotherapy: cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy addresses the behavior and negative thoughts that perpetuate the problems. CBT is effective for anxiety, depression, addiction and eating disorders, among other things.

Eye movements that help!
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, abbreviated to EMDR, is a therapy for people who continue to suffer from the consequences of a shocking experience, such as an accident, sexual violence or a violent incident. An important part of EMDR concerns desensitization. In doing so, the client takes the dysfunctional memory into account. Then the therapist makes horizontal movements with his fingers for 20 to 30 seconds. The client follows these movements with his eyes. Then the client breathes in and out calmly and reports what he experiences. Then the therapist has the client make eye movements again. In this way the client processes all kinds of aspects of the memory.

Valued living!
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) ia a form of behavioral therapy developed in the late 20th century by American psychologist Steven C. Hayes. At the core of ACT is the philosophy that meaningful action enriches life and that fighting the inevitable ultimately comes at the expense of a valuable life. That's why people at ACT learn to act consciously according to their values, and to accept things that they can influence less, such as their emotions and thoughts.
RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY
Do you have a specific question about stress and its consequences for your employees or clients? In addition to psychological treatment, I am happy to offer a solution to your problem on a project basis. As a psychologist and coach I can provide advice and training to your employees in dealing with (post-traumatic) stress. I also have expertise on integration and participation after war and migration. You can see examples of my work below.

MEANING AS A MISSION. MAKING SENSE AFTER WAR AND PEACEKEEPING.
Search for meaning
War and peacekeeping leave an indelible memory in the minds of veterans, especially when they have faced life-threatening events or lost a comrade in combat. These personal tragedies are devastating and set in motion a search for meaning about why they happened and what makes life valuable. The central aim of this thesis is to explore the significance of meaning in the process of cognitive adaptation after military deployment among Dutch veterans who were deployed during war and peacekeeping operations.
AFTER THE MISSION
Tips and tools for soldiers, veterans and the home front
Deployment experiences shape the person who has been on a mission. They often lead to more insight into yourself, others and the world around you. Most soldiers are doing well after returning from a deployment, even if it takes time to get used to the home situation in the Netherlands. A small number of them will have more difficulty giving the special experiences a place. 'After the mission' is intended as a signpost when returning after deployment. In 2020, the website www.nademissie.nl will offer online support.
NIEUW TALENT IN NEDERLAND!
Houtense newcomers on their way to work and education: roadmap and tools
Newcomers especially bring a lot of talents with them! They are enterprising, smart, humorous, social, creative, caring, technical, go-getter, grateful and extremely motivated to build a new life here. These new talents deserve a good job opportunity in our society. This requires more practical and coherent support from, among others, volunteers, coaches, employers and other stakeholders who help create opportunities for them. This publication offers support and guidance tools for newcomers towards participation and work.
